CHAPTER 9
That evening they dined on roasted buffalo hump, sautéed truffle mushrooms, and rice laced with saffron.
"What a grand meal! As fine a meal as the elegant meals served to me at the summer palace outside of St. Petersburg. My compliments to Mr. Feng, my Chinese brother," spoke a contented Alexis, while raising a crystal glass containing fine French champagne.
Feng bowed humbly, and everyone present applauded with approval.
"This here Frenchy champagne tastes like that bubblin' mineral water I once drank up at Yellowstone. Bring me my special bottle," commanded Bill to an Indian servant. Once the bottle was in his hands, he pulled the cork with his teeth and guzzled the 15-year-old whiskey to calm his nerves after a hard day.
Both Alexis and Calamity grimaced as they watched him drain the bottle as if it were water.
Though the grand duke considered Bill a good friend, he disapproved of the famous man's heavy drinking. But out of politeness, and being a guest of Bill's and the American government, he did not feel it was his place to speak any words of disapproval, even if he was heir to the throne of the worlds' largest country.
In an attempt to curtail Bill's excessive drinking, Alexis spoke in Russian to one of his man servants. A moment later, the servant returned, carrying a long object wrapped in a tanned elk hide. In the flickering light of the campfire, Alexis asked Feng to stand before him. Doing as he was told, Alexis unwrapped the elk hide to reveal a magnificent, gold-inlaid thousand-in-one Winchester rifle.
"Brother Feng, I present to you a thousand-in-one Winchester rifle in tribute to a master cook and the brave man who saved the life of the future czar of Russia."
Alexis placed the beautifully engraved weapon in Feng's outstretched arms, then kissed him on both cheeks.
"Hurray for our Chinaman hero! Course, he didn't save the Union during the American Civil War, makin' the Wild West a civilized country for decent white folks like my maligned friend George Custer," screeched Buffalo Bill, with a tinge of jealousy that he himself had not been gifted such a rifle.
Fortified by the strong liquor, Bill drew his pistol and began firing the weapon into the air in pretense of celebration. "Ah six-bullet salute to the Chinaman hero Woo Feng. He saved Russia, or did he save all the world?" Bill snapped with slurred words.
Before Bill could make an even bigger fool of himself, Calamity snuck up behind him and cold-cocked him over the back of the head, knocking Bill unconscious.
The big-bodied, strong woman threw Bill over her shoulder. "Uh...beg ya pardon, Highness, Buffaler Bill is tuckered out, and it’s been a hardtack day. Duck, you an' Feng best turn in for dah night. I'll care for Bill's needs," she said as she carried his limp body down to the river.
In the light of the bright moon, Calamity stripped Bill of his clothes. With ease she tossed him into the cold, running water. Regaining consciousness, Bill thrashed about in the water as he struggled to keep his head above the surface.
